Physical activity is proven to help with depression and stress, I also believe that art can have the same affect on our students. Is a "Stress Lesson" something that we can incorporate into our teaching models? We add things like nutrition into Phys Ed because they fit well together and it "makes sense." Would something like stress management and stress relief be something that we could teach in our Art or Physical Education classes? In my opinion this is a yes.
What do you guys think?
I think that this is a great idea. I use art as a way of destressing all the time, or I'll go to the gym or for a walk. Art, Music and PE can all be used for outlets of stress. I just don't think that all students are aware of this, or know how to use it to their advantage. I think that it would be a wonderful asset to most students to have classes on stress management, and the different ways of dealing with it, depending on likes or dislikes.
ReplyDeleteI think incorporating stress management is a necessity among high school students. We could possibly start teaching this in something we called C.A.P.P.(Career and Personal Planning)in my high school. Giving hints and tips of how to relax and stay health through whatever difficult time they are going through. Also incorporating a mini stress lesson in our PE classes showing them that exercise can decrease "stress hormones" and increase endorphins, your body's ‘feel-good’ chemicals, giving your mood a natural boost..
ReplyDeleteI also did this in CAPP but having maybe a lesson on stress management and how exercise helps reduce stress in a PE class can be very helpful for students because you are emphasizing that being active is significant for a healthy lifestyle and that is what we are trying to accomplish: being active for life. So incorporating stress and nutrition into PE I think is very appropriate.
ReplyDeleteI also think this is a great idea! For both Art, PE and Music. I know in PE it is easy to incorporate what the benefits are because they are scientific and can be explained that way. However, I think explaining the benefits of all leisure activities is beneficial. Art and music are also significant ways to de-stress and relax and I think teaching students that they need to take time for themselves and do things they love to do is very important.
